Position Description

The High School Comprehensive Counselor plays a vital role in promoting student well-being, academic growth and success, and post-secondary readiness. This position provides social-emotional support, academic advising, safeguarding, and university guidance counseling for Grades 9–12 students. The counselor works collaboratively with students, families, faculty, administration, and external providers to ensure that each student is holistically supported and prepared for life beyond high school.

Key Responsibilities

Academic and Post-Secondary Guidance:

1) Guide students through academic planning, course selection, and graduation requirements.

2) Provide university guidance counseling to a global student body seeking post-secondary opportunities in various destinations.

3) Conduct individual student and family meetings with students and parents to support academic planning, post-secondary planning, and other needs as appropriate.

4) Lead group sessions, workshops, and large-scale presentations for students and parents on counseling-related topics, including course requests, social-emotional learning, safeguarding, and university planning.

5) Work closely with academic departments and the school-wide counseling team to support students and programs.

6) Collaborate with the counseling team members and administration to support individual students and manage each grade level. 

7) Collaborate and liaise with university representatives on campus and at networking events, such as the AES college fair, university information days, local and international conferences, and professional events, to remain current in global higher education trends.

Social-Emotional Learning:

1) Deliver regular social-emotional lessons to Grades 9 and 10 through the Seminar program.

2) Provide social-emotional learning sessions for Grades 11 and 12.

3) Meet individually or in groups with students in Grades 9–12 to support SEL needs 

4) Lead parent workshops for support around SEL topics 

Student Well-being and Safeguarding:

1) Actively participate in the High School Safeguarding Team.

2) Manage communication with students, families, faculty, and administration with confidentiality and professionalism.

3) Conduct student risk assessments and intervene appropriately.

4) Liaise with external professionals when necessary.

5) Collaborate with the Student Support Services Team to ensure coordinated care and support for students.

Additional Responsibilities:

1) Represent AES in various professional conferences and events globally. 

2) Communicate and provide documents such as transcripts, proof of graduation, and predicted grades to external institutions and organizations. 

3) Write individualized letters of recommendation for each student, as needed.

4) Support standardized testing (PSAT, SAT, MAP, etc.). 

5) Engage in ongoing professional growth and contribute to school initiatives.

6) Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.

Required Qualifications and Skills

1) Advanced degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or a related field.

2) At least 3 years of recent full-time experience in secondary school counseling, including academic, social-emotional, and post-secondary support, either in the US or abroad.

3) Deep knowledge of international university systems, particularly North American, UK, and European institutions. 

4) Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

5) Strong commitment to safeguarding and student well-being.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

1) 5+ years of experience in comprehensive counseling, either in the US or abroad.

2) Familiarity with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.

3) Familiarity with ISCA standards and the ISCA counseling model.

4) Familiarity with data collection and data-informed decision-making.

5) Familiarity with PowerSchool and MaiaLearning.

6) Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, multicultural environment.

7) Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks calmly and professionally.  

8) Knowledge of international university systems, including Australian and East Asian institutions. 

Compensation:
